WRITE OFF: LTE: $183,120. Stakes Winner. Write Off captured the Bensalem Handicap at Philadelphia Park and the Spectacular Bid Stakes at Gulfstream. Sold for $50,000 at the F-T NY yearling sale. He is an own son of Wajima and Rare Lady’s first stakes winner.

BLACKHOME DUKE: PREMIER SIRE, undefeated for 8 years 1990-1998. After his death, he remained on the list for 5 years, and today his offspring continue to earn rankings on the list. Produced a great number of champion offspring, including numerous National Champions and All Americans that became household names in the Percheron industry. The light amber eyes and long, perfectly curly manes and tails that were a trademark in the Warner lines came from Mr Entenmann. NEVER BEND: LTE $641,524. CHIEF-DE-RACE. Champion 2 year-old. Following his racing career, he was syndicated for US$1,225,000 and entered stud at Spendthrift Farm. A beautiful but headstrong colt, Never Bend was one of the best of his generation in the United States even though he did not quite stay Classic distances. He was an even better sire than racehorse and left a lasting legacy on both sides of the Atlantic. Never Bend's juvenile earnings of US$402.968 were a new record for a 2-year-old, breaking the previous record. ROLLING ACRES LEONET: Notable Broodmare Sire, Grandsire of National and World Champions. 25% DON KAPTIF (Canadian). 9.38% SILVER DAWN KONCARNO (Grand champion at the International. He was the surprise of the show. He had been only recently purchased by Frank Rathje and his manager, Paul C.H. Engler, from his breeder, Guy E. West of Kokomo, Indiana. West had shown him as a yearling, a 2-year-old and 3-year-old at the Indiana State Fair, but never placed higher than third. He had been worked in harness as both a 2 and 3-year-old and had the collar marks to show it. This horse bred well for Rathje, siring a couple of winning “gets” in those immediate post-war Internationals. I don’t know when Ray Bast bought him, probably about that time, and he was still fresh enough to be grand champion for Bast at the 1953 Wisconsin State Fair–a 15-year-old, snow white grand champion.). 5.66% CARNOT (bred in France, to J.Crouch, & W.S. COLLEGE LYNDA: Article excerpt from the Wellington Advertiser: “The purchase of College Lynda was significant,” said Robert, who helped broker the deal in 1970 through Professor Orville Kennedy and Ivan Taylor, of the Ontario College of Agriculture. “She had a long tail, which Percheron horses didn’t usually have. She was different … she had a nice Percheron quality. She had a nice foot, long neck and a nice flat hock.” College Lynda went on to become the Grand Champion at the RWF and in many show rings, and was also a cornerstone broodmare for the Blackhome Percherons, ensuring her a place in the history of her breed. Other horses would share a place in the Blackhome legacy, like stallions Highview Dragano and Blackhome Duke, both champions and premier sires, to name a few. 50% MODERN CHIEF, 12.5% DON AGAIN.

BLACKS LA PRINCESS: (Canadian) Heavy foundation breeding. She only ever had one foal, She was bred to Rolling Acres Leonet and the resulting foal was Blackhome Carrie Doll, who is the Dam of the legendary Blackhome Duke.

MAVERICK: Champion 1974 & 1975 Toronto Royal and many times at National Percheron show in U.S. Maverick, one of the stallions that put Art Bast & family in the front row. Foaled in 1971, Maverick was grand champion at the National Percheron Show in Ohio in 1974, ‘75, ‘76 and ‘77. He was bred by Bob Eschrich, Jr., Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Bob was another Wisconsin breeder who kept the lamps burning in the ‘50s and ‘60s. Maverick was sired by Drake Farms Chief, one of the breed saving sires of that period. His owner, Sherman Read from Michigan, was very generous with the horse and Art got several offspring off of him before he bought his son, Maverick. 25% LYNWOOD DON (a prolific breeding stallion Lynnwood Don, the grandsire of the great Drake Farms Chief). 21.88% DON AGAIN (Don Again was the son of Don Degas, he by the foundation sire (and own son of Carnot) named Jehovah. Don Again was the sire of many champion Percherons and helped to establish Mr. & Mrs. Chas. Lynn's, Lynnwood Stock Farm, of Carmel, Indiana as one of the premier breeding establishments of its day. During his time at Lynnwood, Don Again sired many notable offspring including the stallion Don Kaptif and the mare Nelly Don. His consistency as a sire helped Don Again and his sire Don Degas capture 1st and 2nd prize Get of Sire at the 1937 and 1938 International. His most prolific breeding offspring was perhaps the stallion Lynnwood Don, the grandsire of the great Drake Farms Chief.)

EASTER FURY: (Canadian) Champion Percheron stallion at 1965 Toronto Royal for W E Harrison, sold to Bill Westbrook of Ohio who showed him to Champion National Percheron Show in 1968. He is best known as a top brood mare sire. Girons Buckeye Ambassador (1983 National Champion stallion was out a Fury daughter) His best sons were Furys Commander La Fury and RMS ED POWERS (listed above). 25% DON AGAIN, 9.38% LAET. LA DON CHIEF: Sired by DRAKE FARMS CHIEF out of a mare by LA DON. NASRULLAH: LTE $15,217. CHIEF-DE-RACE. Champion Two Year Old Colt in England. Leading Sire in England and Led the American Sire List 5 times. The son of Nearco arrived from Ireland with star status for the 1951 breeding season and did nothing to dispel that image during his nine seasons at the Hancock family's Claiborne Farm near Paris, Ky. Nasrullah went on to sire a then-record 98 stakes winners, and today his name continues to evoke memories of breeding and racing at the highest levels. Male descendants Secretariat, Bold Ruler, Nashua, Never Bend, Seattle Slew, Mill Reef, and Blushing Groom, to name just a few, have seen to that. More than anything, Nasrullah supplied a new source of speed to the North American racehorse, and his blood, along with that of fellow Claiborne stallion Princequillo, provided an unbeatable combination. According to The Jockey Club's records, Nasrullah sired 290 winners and 84 stakes winners. Nasrullah is one of 205 stallions whose accomplishments at stud are profiled in Great Thoroughbred Sires of the World. Nasrullah was bred and owned by the Aga Khan, who initially stood the horse at Barton Grange Stud in Suffolk. After the 1944 breeding season, he sold the horse to Joe McGrath for £19,000, and Nasrullah moved to Ireland. McGrath, in turn, sold the horse to A. B. "Bull" Hancock of Claiborne Farm for £150,000 (variously reported as equivalent to US$340,000, $370,000, or $372,000, depending on the source consulted) with the sale taking effect after the 1950 breeding season McGrath retained one breeding right. GREY FLIGHT: LTE $68,990. Black Type Producer. Designated Reine De Course mare. Dam of 9 stakes winners. Dam of Clear Ceiling and What A Pleasure (above). An own daughter of Mahmoud. Foaled in Kentucky, Grey Flight was bred by J. T. Taylor, who sold her privately as a weanling to Abram S. Hewitt. Hewitt, in turn, consigned the filly to the Saratoga yearling sale, where she was purchased for US$35,000 (the sale-topping price for a filly) by Mrs. Henry Carnegie Phipps for her Wheatley Stable. Grey Flight was trained by James “Sunny Jim” Fitzsimmons. A gray mare, Grey Flight was small but very attractive and was commonly held to bear a close resemblance to her sire, Mahmoud. Neatly made, well-balanced and close-coupled with a feminine head, she had a good shoulder and powerful hindquarters. Trainer "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons clearly considered her a pure sprinter, starting her only once at a distance beyond six furlongs.
